Letterbox Love #16

Letterbox Love came about after some drama with the American book haul memes, so the UKYA bloggers came together on Twitter to organise one of our own. Summaries are taken from the cover, or Amazon/NetGalley/Goodreads in the case of e-books, unless otherwise stated. Hosted by Narratively Speaking.

I was a busy bee last weekend and didn’t get a chance to post this so you’ve got two week’s worth today!

For Review:

Losing It – Cora Cormack

Bliss Edwards is a virgin.

But her plan for a no-strings, one night stand turns out to be anything but simple. Especially the next day in class when she recognises her hot new professor.

She’d left him – naked in her bed – just 8 hours earlier...

I really enjoyed this – review here! Thanks Ebury/RHCP!

Unbreakable – Kami Garcia (paperback)

Kennedy Waters didn’t believe in ghosts, until one tried to kill her.

When Kennedy finds her mother dead, her world unravels. Then she meets gorgeous identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart who reveal that her mother was part of The Legion. A secret society responsible for protecting the world – a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now the Lockharts need Kennedy’s help to track down the evil being responsible. Will they be able to destroy it before it kills again?

This sounds great. Thanks S&S!

Debutantes in Love – Cora Harrison (paperback)

Bright lights, dark secrets and first love.

It’s 1924. Leaving their beloved Beech Grove Manor to go to London for the season, Poppy and Daisy Derrington know that they must shine as debutantes. Since a girl cannot inherit her father’s estate, the sisters have to marry well or face being left penniless.

But it’s not money or marriage that interests them. It’s music, conema, literature, fashion, parties, love – everything that is shiny and new. Trapped by the dusty traditions of their class, Daisy and Poppy must choose between family duty and the bright lights of the roaring twenties...

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book, but I’m hoping that this will be a bit more. Thanks Macmillan!

How to Love – Katie Cotugo (paperback)

BEFORE
Reena has loved Sawyer LaGrande for as long as she can remember. He’s never noticed her until one day...he does. But then he disappears, leaving a devastated – and pregnant – Reena behind.

AFTER
Three years later and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter Hannah. But just as suddenly and swiftly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer again?

A heart-wrenching and unforgettable love story from an exceptional debut author.

Ah, this sounds so good! Thanks Quercus!

Shine – Candy Gourlay (proof)

Monsters are in the eye of the beholder.

Forced to hide herself away from the superstitious community of Mirasol, thirteen-year-old Rosa seeks solace online. There she meets Ansel95, and as their friendship moves from virtual to real, Rosa discovers she’s not the only one with something to hide...

As Rosa’s social life blossoms, how will she seize the freedom to be who she really is?

From the author of the critically-acclaimed Tall Story, comes a haunting, intense and moving novel which weaves myths and ghosts into a modern setting.

I’m really intrigued by this. Thanks David Fickling Books!

I also got a finished copy of Monsters by Ilsa J Bick – yay! Thanks Quercus!

Bought:

Heist Society – Ally Carter (e-book)

When Katarina Bishop was three, her parents took her to the Louvre...to case it. For her seventh birthday, Katarina and her Uncle Eddie travelled to Austria...to steal the crown jewels. When Kat turned fifteen, she planned a con of her own – scamming her way into the best boarding school in the country, determined to leave the family business behind. But now her dad’s life is on the line, and Kat must go back to the world she tried so hard to escape...

This series is loved by so many people that it being only 99p on Kindle, I snapped it up!

A F*cked Up life in Books – Anonymous (e-book)

The most f*cked up memoir you’ll ever read.

A foul mouthed memori about a dysfunctional life.

Each chapter recounts a key moment in the author’s life through the books she was reading at the time, including:

- Howard’s End, the only text she had to read whilst engaging in sexual intercourse.
- The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, which she had in her bag while on holiday in Tangier when a market trader offered her to buy her from her mother for 30 camels.
- Angela’s Ashes, her chosen reading material during her breast reduction surgery.
- Wild Swans, the book she read the day she decided to have nothing more to do with ehr mother.

It is funny, it is shocking, it is heart-breaking, it is very rude and it is totally unforgettable.

I think this sounds fantastic – such a great idea! Another 99p bargain.

Once again, Foyles beckoned. These are the two books I snapped up:

The Lucky Ones – Anna Godbersen (paperback)

In the thrilling conclusion to the Bright Young Things series, Cordelia, Letty and Astrid will discover if their luck can last... Or if dark surprises are on the horizon.

The summer of 1929 is coming to an end, and New York’s It Girls have escaped the city heat for the lush lawns and sparkling bays of White Cover. But will they find what they’re looking for?

Cordelia Grey is flying high with celebrity pilot Max Darby. But Max has a reputation to uphold – and a secret to hide. A public romance with a bootlegger’s daughter could cost him more than just his good name... Aspiring triple-threat Letty Larkspur has finally gotten her big breaks, but will her talent make her a target in the cutthroat world of Hollywood? Newly married to her longtime sweetheart, socialite Astrid Donal finds herself spending more time with one of his henchmen. With so many secrets between man and wife, is the honetmoon over already?

Finally time to finish this trilogy! I don't think this was even published over here, even though the first two were...

The Book Thief – Markus Zusak (paperback)

This is the tale of The Book Thief, as narrated by death. And when Death tells a story, you really have to listen.

It’s just a small story really, about, amongst other things:

A girl
An accordionist
Some fanatical Germans
A Jewish fist fighter
And quite a lot of thievery.

About time really.

Soulmates – Holly Bourne (e-book)

Every so often, two people are born who are perfect for each other. Soulmates. But while the odds of this happening are about as likely as being struck by lightning, when these people do meet and fall in love, thunderstorms, lightning strikes and lashings of rain are only the beginning of their problems. After a chance meeting at a local band night, Poppy and Noah find themselves swept up in a whirlwind romance unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before. But with a secret international agency preparing to separate them and a trail of destruction rumbling in their wake, they are left with an impossible choice between the world, or a life without love...

I’ve heard fantastic things about this and it’s only £1.70 on Kindle at the moment!

Keeping Her – Cora Carmack (e-book)

What happens after the happy ending?

Garrick is over the moon that his girlfriend, Bliss, said yes. He’s finally found the love of his life. That means his worries are over, right?

But when he invites her to visit London and meet his family, he is presented with a whole new set of problems. How will his privileged and wealthy family react to Bliss’s unique brand of awkwardness?

I just read Losing It and really enjoyed it so I couldn’t resist snapping it up!
